  • The 3 C’s: The Advantages of Living on Your College Campus

The 3 C’s: The Advantages of Living on Your College Campus

So you are off to college in the fall. You can’t wait to be an independent adult. And, if your college doesn’t require students to live on campus that first year, it may be tempting to dream about living off-campus. While you should always consider all of your options, there are many good reasons why students should live on campus. These advantages can be broken down into the 3 C’s:

Convenience One of the greatest things about living on campus is the fact that there is no travel time involved. Time is precious when you are a college student, so the fact that classes, libraries and computer labs are all close by is a real plus. The time saved can be used for studying or enjoying time with friends. All colleges strive to provide students with a microcosm of a town—just about anything a student could need or want is nearby. This includes shops, clinics, gyms, and in some cases, even movie theatres or bowling alleys. Living on campus also simplifies life since there is no need to pay bills to various companies each month because housing and dining costs are included in college fees. Even though the cost of living on campus may seem steep, the convenience is well worth it. Students don’t have to worry about getting groceries, making their own meals, trying to find roommates, driving in heavy traffic, etc. When they need something, it is just a short walk to get it…whatever it might be.
Connections You may have heard people say that they made friends at college who turned out to be life-long friends. These types of deep connections are more likely to occur when a student lives on campus because there are so many opportunities to engage with others. Students can also easily gain access to the campus recreation center for physical activities, including classes and intermural sports, where they can meet new people. Being on campus also allows for easier access to club meetings and special events hosted by the college. Furthermore, many college students, even freshmen, work while going to school. Living on campus provides connections to all types of service jobs for students. Working on campus benefits students because the jobs are close by and they typically close down for all major breaks, so there is no need to locate a different job when each new semester begins. Campus employers also understand that students are there to learn, so they tend to be understanding of schedule changes and other needs of college students. Overall, living on campus allows students connect with others who have similar interests and goals.
Contentment While each college and student is different, national studies show that students who live on campus are generally happier with their overall college experience. The reason for this is most likely due to the ease of being actively involved in college life. Additionally, first year students who live on campus have higher GPA’s than students who live off-campus, and they also have higher graduation rates. Living on campus, especially for the first year, can make the transition to college life and adulthood easier. Students are less isolated and more involved in the many types of social and academic activities on a college campus when they live in the middle of it all. So while living off campus may sound like fun, another look at the college residence halls should be considered.

  • Benefits of Living On Campus

Most traditional colleges require first-year freshmen to live on campus. While some may argue that this is simply another way for colleges to get money out of students, there are several advantages to living on campus during the first year of college life, and possibly throughout your academic career.

One of the first reasons is economic. Yes, tuition and housing can be expensive, but when you consider the amount of money you’d pay in rent and utilities to live off campus, the amounts don’t differ that much. Housing may actually be cheaper because of all the amenities that are included in your tuition/housing: rent (probably looking at $500-$700 per month unless you find roommates to share expenses with), electric bill, water/sewage/garbage, telephone, internet, and basic cable. As part of your housing costs, there is also the possibility that these will be covered by various scholarships or housing concessions that you can apply for through Financial Aid as opposed to having to take out student loans to help cover the cost of off-campus living. Also, when you live on campus in the dorms, you have campus security on call, 24/7. There are generally Resident Assistants (RAs) for every dorm floor and someone sitting at a front desk in the lobby of the dorms to provide emergency assistance. There is usually a curfew in terms of the door locking and only those who live in the dorm being allowed access through the use of issued keys. You’re also within easy access of campus security/police should you require their assistance. Thirdly, living on campus gives you easy access to campus that someone living off campus doesn’t have. You don’t have to worry about driving to class and being late for traffic or because of car trouble. You can walk to the library, classes, computer labs, or cafeteria. You can save money on gas (or possibly not have to own a car at all considering that most college towns will have some form of public transportation for when you need to go off-campus). One of the last reasons why living on campus is a good idea for freshmen is the increased social life. Living on campus means you are right in the middle of campus life – dances, parties, lectures, entertainers, intramural sports, and contests. Being in the midst of all this gives you the chance to meet your fellow students and get to know them, to make friends quickly. As a freshman spending time away from home for the first time, it’s easy for you to feel lonely, depressed and/or homesick. Getting involved in campus life can help you to overcome those feelings and make it through that first semester/year away from home. Are there disadvantages to living on campus? Of course, and some people who like their privacy or want to live in a quieter environment may wish to move out of the dorms/off campus as quickly as they can, but for freshmen, living on campus can be one of the best and quickest ways to establish yourself as an independent, successful college student. If living on campus is not an option for you because you are older and already have a family or moving to a campus is not an option, you can go to http://www.college-scholarships.com/online-colleges-and-online-degrees.htm and find an online university.

  • Five Healthy Living Tips for College Students

As we enter the new year, everyone is thinking about how they can live better…including college students. You don’t have to create a difficult,multi-tiered resolution to see the results of living healthier. With a bit of planning and determination, college students can start the springsemester off on the right foot, enjoying more energy and clearer focus when classes resume.
    Eat Better
Everyone has heard of the dreaded Freshman 15, but if you did put on a few pounds last semester, you don’t need to just be resigned to living with them and maybe adding to them. Universities are wising up about supplying nutritional, healthy food options for students. Plan to belly up to the salad bar more often next semester and skip the fried food steam tables. Use that little fridge for storing pre-cut veggies and fruits instead of left-over Chinese and Hot Pockets. Planning ahead by keeping easy-to-grab healthy snacks around will make eating better much easier once the semester really gears up.
    Sleep Better
Pulling all-nighters is not a badge of honor, like some college students believe. Studies show that being consistently sleep deprived affects your brain and body even more than having several beers. It slows reaction times and blurs your ability to make good choices. Make an action plan for next semester now. Pull out that planner and prepare it for the upcoming semester. Block out your class and work schedules and then section off times for studying so that it isn’t left to the last minute, meaning that you will have to live on just a few hours of sleep a night.
    Exercise Better
When you think of exercise, you may think of hours spent in the student rec center sweating away. And, while accessing the gym that you already pay for in your college fees is a smart idea, you can easily build more exercise into your day doing things you already do. Take the stairs instead of the elevator and walk to that class across campus instead of taking the bus. Find other ways to add steps to your daily life. Once you do this and recognize how much better you feel with those endorphins flying around in your system, you may find yourself scheduling time to get to the student rec center more often too.
    Drink Better
No, I don’t mean switching to micro-brews. I mean, drink more water. Many students have switched from soda to energy drinks, thinking they are healthier, and that they will make up for the lack of sleep they get. But nothing can replace the benefits of drinking more water. It keeps you hydrated, which helps you think and feel better, since hydration is required to keep all of the cells of your body work at their optimum. It provides you with quality energy and mental clarity—the exact opposite of what caffeine offers in the form of jittery, spastic energy with a big crash at the end of it. Invest in a reusable water bottle that you can carry with you everywhere this coming semester. Fill it up at water fountains so that you are never without that life-giving H2O. An added benefit: you will save bucks that can be better spent on more important things.
    Decompress Better
So, maybe you bought into the belief last semester that college students party to decompress. But that doesn’t mean you have to continue on that track in the coming months. In fact, partying isn’t decompressing…it’s hiding from the stress that has built up. Make a plan for decompressing in a healthier way in the New Year. Attend yoga classes at the rec center, take walks to clear your head, make time for friends who care about more than just clubbing. Learn to meditate. Once you engage in a different, smarter form of relaxation, you will soon realize how last semester’s form of decompression actually added stress to your life.

  • It’s Not too Late to Change your Helicopter Parenting Ways

It’s Not too Late to Change your Helicopter Parenting Ways

Helicopter Parenting Ways Trying to protect your child from all the bad stuff in the world may sound like a good thing; after all, parents should want to keep their kids safe. But helicopter parenting goes beyond the normal limits and can actually stunt a child’s emotional growth. While helicopter parents really do have their child’s best interest at heart, they are creating young people who have difficulty making decisions, who get easily overwhelmed and who feel entitled to whatever they want. It’s not a great lifestyle for the parents either! Recent studies show that helicopter parents are often depressed and anxious.
Now that your child is heading off to college, you may realize that you have done more than you should have for him. You may even be worried that you have set him up to fail. You may think it’s too late to change your parenting style. But it isn’t! But just because he is out of the house doesn’t mean there aren’t ways to encourage his independence. Here are some tips on how you can assist in your child’s growth into a successful adult by allowing them to take control over their current and future circumstances.
Let them vent, but just for a while. When they call home complaining about a professor, class or roommate, listen to them grumble for a while, but then let them know that they need to take action now that they have gripped about it. Encourage them to problem-solve with you so they don’t feel abandoned, but focus on being a sounding board rather than being an oracle.
Let them make the final decision. It’s great if at this age your child still asks for your advice. But there will be times when they may be using your recommendations as a way to avoid making decisions themselves. Instead of telling them what to do, ask them questions to get them critically thinking through the pros and cons of their potential actions.
Let them make their own mistakes. Sometimes the best thing we can do for our children is to let them make their own mistakes. This can be really tough to watch! But allowing them to learn now in a less risky environment will prepare them for making wise decisions later in life. A failed exam is much easier to live with than most other adult problems they will face after college.
Let them live with the consequences. This is another toughie that all loving parents struggle with. But sometimes we have to let our children know that all of our actions (or non-actions) have natural consequences that we need to take into account. When my daughter was in middle school, I got in the practice of asking her, “And what did you learn from that” when a decision of hers backfired. I think it helped. Now in college she is able to seriously consider a course of action, weighing the possible benefits vs. the possible consequences, and decide what is best for her. This is one of the best things parents can do for their children.

Support them no matter how it turns out. Just because you are allowing them to grow up and make their own (sometimes questionable) choices doesn’t mean that you stop supporting them, even when they make mistakes. It’s important that they know that they always have you to be there for them, even when they do something “wrong.” It may take a while, but you and your child can find that middle ground between hovering and being totally hands-off.

  • Top 10 Things To Consider When Selecting A College

    1. Accreditation
Finding out about a school’s accreditation is perhaps the most important factor. This alone could change the course of your schooling and what you do with your degree, so it is important to also research how long a school has held accreditation and if there have been any lapses. Some schools are regionally accredited or nationally accredited, while others may have qualifications on certain courses. Depending on the line of study that you plan to take, you may also need to make sure that those specific classes are accredited through the national licensing agency.
    2. Course load
Whether you are considering online or brick and mortar schools, most colleges have a minimum course load that is required for both residency and upper division rules. Often this is determined through the completion of a certain amount of classes within a specific time period. The amount of work that you will be required to do at once can be a big consideration when you are choosing a college.
    3. Scheduling
Scheduling will tie in to the considerations of your course load as well. Brick and mortar schools have classes at specific times, which you will be required to attend, while many online courses will have deadlines for work or time slots for open discussion. You will need to make sure that you can manage these responsibilities within any existing schedule you may have.
    4. On campus and online Many brick and mortar schools offer online options, even for students who are living on campus. This can offer you some greater flexibility not just in daily life but also in how quickly you would like to complete your education. If you are planning on being in attendance it can be wise to also look in to online options. If you are planning on completing your degree online, it is also important to compare any differences in class options. College-Scholarships.com can help you with comparison tools to weigh your choices.
    5. Specialties
Although not everyone knows the exact direction of their education when they first enroll, most people have a general idea of the career paths that interest them. If you have a specific major in line, then it will be important to make sure that your school offers strengths in these courses.
    6. Location Whether you are considering online or campus based classes, location is important. Some lines of study will require that you visit the campus to complete a practicum and this can influence your decision of schools. Other times, you may be able to qualify for state based scholarships, even if you have chosen online classes for a college that is in the same state where you live.
    7. Provisions
If you have a disability, you will want to make sure that your college has provisions and services that will benefit you. This can apply to both online and campus courses, and should be listed with health services or specifically under disability considerations.
    8. Accelerated learning options
While most colleges have a required course load, not all colleges will allow for a faster learning track. Some schools will require that you complete a certain amount of credits before you can double up on classes, so you will want to make sure that these allowances are in keeping with your own goals.
    9. Transfers
Find out about the process of transferring credits. This can be important if you have completed credit classes in the past and would like to have that go towards your transcript. Transferring can also become an issue if you are moving on to graduate classes, or if you decide to switch schools.
    10. Learning environment
How classes are conducted can play a large part in your educational success. This can include a lecture versus a discussion format, as well as a regimented or self-motivated education format.

  • How To Find An Online Scholarship

How To Find An Online Scholarship

Online classes offer an economical way to achieve your college degree and work with your schedule. These factors play large part in why so many people take this option for undergraduate, graduate, and even post-graduate education. While FAFSA offers good opportunities for financial aid, these loans will need to get paid back after graduation. Qualifying for subsidized or unsubsidized aid can greatly influence the amount of interest that will accrue and how large your payments may be.
Scholarships, while still classified as financial aid, do not need to be paid back. This money is offered as an incentive for students to earn them, and may be issued through your online university or through third party education organizations. Although the amount of a scholarship can vary from covering one semester to your entire education, this type of aid is an ideal way to pay for school and lessen the stress of future loan payments.
    Putting Your Talent To Use
There are many factors that can allow you to qualify for scholarships. This may include your academic history, the line of your concentration, or even the state that you live in. Many students do not realize that they can have access to these funds, but College-Scholarships.com can make your search an easy and efficient task.
At College-Scholarships.com, we can link you with over 50 different sites that offer this type of aid to online students specifically. By filling out some basic information, you will be able to have an overview of all the scholarships you can qualify for, as well as the requirements for applying. Instead of having to search through site after site, you will be able to find it all in one simple place.
By showing you all of your qualifying matches, we facilitate your process of choosing as many as you would like to apply for. Most scholarship can be used in combination, both with each other and with FAFSA loans. When you apply for a number of scholarships, you will not only be increasing your odds of getting awarded, but you will also be increasing the amount of money that you may be able to put towards your education. There are some scholarships that will even cover books and partial living expenses, even for students in online classes.
    Taking Advantage Of Funds
College-Scholarships.com puts you in touch with the organizations that could award you money. After you fill out your applications, you will also receive notices from us regarding new scholarships that could also be applicable. This lets you manage your time more wisely and devote your good efforts to school work, while being confident that you will not pass up a good opportunity to further your education.

  • 5 Tips to Make the Most of your College Visits

5 Tips to Make the Most of your College Visits

There is more to visiting a college campus than the official tour. Yes, you should definitely participate in that also, but consider doing that in addition to other things that will help you get a real feel of what it might be like to live and work in that college community. Take advantage of the opportunities the college offers prospective students—and then, explore further.
Stay overnight Some universities require you to have a “sponsor” to stay with if you spend the night on campus, but others encourage it and will even include it in the orientation as an option. Take them up on it if you can. Eat in a couple of different dining halls, sleep in a resident’s hall and sit in on a class or two. These types of experiences will go a long way to helping you get a better feel for what attending school there is really like.
Visit the nearby town Many college campuses are surrounded by towns that caters to the college crowd. No doubt you will spend a good amount of time there if you decide to attend that university, so spend some time touring the town too. How friendly are the people? What drug and convenience stores are around? What are the names of the best restaurants or other hang outs for college kids? Is there a movie theater or a bowling alley nearby? Do the “townies” act like they see the students as a part of the community? Every college town has its own atmosphere; feeling comfortable there will be important to feeling like you fit into the college area as a whole.
Talk to current students This, in my opinion, is one of the best ways to find out about the “real” college environment. People in general love to talk about their experiences, so it is usually easy to stop random students and ask them questions. Find out where they like to go to have fun. Learn about their favorite dining halls and study places. Ask if they would choose this university again, if they had to do it over. Why? Come up with creative questions that will give you the answers to the most important aspects of living on your own for the first time.
Learn the layout of the campus This includes the library, the student clinic, the dining halls and if you know what major you will declare, the buildings where a majority of your classes will be held. Also, look at which resident halls would be most convenient for you. You may want to choose your dorm based on how convenient it is to dining and classes instead of picking the one with the most updated rooms. It may not mean much to you now, but when you are tired from studying, but need to eat or locate the right book for an essay, location and convenience will be of great import!
Explore on your own There are a lot of places on every campus that your typical college tour won’t show you, but may be of great interest. Don’t be afraid to take a walking tour of your own to see the “real” campus…the parts that aren’t in the glossy brochures. Some of the coolest places to study or hangout are not part of the official tour, but you will definitely want to know about them sooner, rather than later. If you like to study in cafes, go to each of the nearby local coffee shops to try the coffee or your favorite beverage. Get the feel for the clientele. See how comfy their chairs are. These things will be of much more practical use than you may expect, and sooner than you think! Come up with other ideas of your particular creature comforts. Believe it or not, these things are a vital part of being happy in a community while being away from home.
These suggestions are all about learning the school inside-out—learning about the school not from the employees or the college website, but really exploring and learning about the places, events and people that are important to you. Remember that the college experience is much more than academics, so go beyond the campus tours to get a better understanding of if that college is the place you could consider your home away from home.

  • Silicon Minds

The guys at Microsoft Research announced a very exciting competition: the silicon minds challenge. The goal of the competition is to foster novel ideas in the area of game AI.

Many years ago I wrote a computer game called De Profundis where I was in charge (among other things) of the game AI. Moving on to become an AI researcher it is interesting to reminisce and draw some connections.

On one hand, the game AI field is the perfect arena to try out new ideas for AI researchers. For AI researchers working on agents, planning and human interaction (speech, NLP) I could imagine it would be extremely valueable to interact with MMORPG's (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games). I don't know whether anyone in the research community has ever done this before, but having an unlimited source of humans to interact with seems like quite the experimental setup. This also applies to virtual worlds like second life ofcourse. AI Research has contributed to the game AI field ofcourse, so let me highlight two recent projects:

    1. The university of Alberta games group: these guys do some amazing work on several kinds of games. As far as I understand it, most of their efforst are focussed on games where the mathematics are in some sense understood: chess, poker,... What I mean by the mathematics are understood is that with infinite computational capabilities, we would be able to solve these games. The U of A group also do some work on AI for real time strategy games (e.g. Age of Empires). A mathematical analysis of these games is much harder (if possible at all). The AI necessary for these games is much closer to what I would think of as strong AI.
    2. The Applied Games Group at Microsoft research: the organizers of the silicon minds challenge have developed a few innovations for game AI themselves. Their machine learning approach to inferring gamer skills (know as TrueSkill) is used by the XBox Live service. They have also enhanced Forza Motorsport with a reinforcement learning agent that learns to drive from observing human drivers.

Unfortunately, the game AI field has very special requirements that prohibit the use of many innovations from the research community. First and foremost, game AI are supposed to make games more fun. More sophisticated agents do not necessarily mean more fun: one can spend a large amount of time making opponents (in first person shooters or racing games) smarter, but if that means the player always looses, he or she might not enjoy the game that much. Also, games are big business, and game engineers want to understand the behavior of their agents. It is unacceptable to release an agent out in the open which in the middle of a battle starts to act weird. Hence, game engineers often limit the intelligence of agents to (pre-historic ?!?) methods such as rule based systems and (heuristic) search because they can understand the behavior and debug it more easily. (It would be unfair to forget to give credit to the people that have applied reinforcement learning and neural networks to games; afaik mostly in the areas of racing games.) To get a rough idea about what is hot-or-not in the game AI field, take a look at AI Wisdom.

One could say, who cares what technique to use: rules and search work incredibly well! Very true. In my humble opinion, the AI/machine learning community has sometimes over-focussed on new algorithms and models and too little on building intelligent solutions. Although in fields like robotics, biology and vision, our machine learning tools have had a huge impact, I think there are many fields where the AI community does not have a good understanding on how to integrate all our tools to make a large working system. Hence, silicon minds looks like a promising challenge and I am very excited to see what people come up with.

  • Requiem for a Dream

Based on the 1978 novel of the same name, Darren Aronofsky’s follow up to his debut feature Pi is a dark and distressing tale about the perils of addiction, and is undoubtedly one of the most visually and aurally distinctive movies of the early twenty first century. Requiem for a Dream follows four Coney Islanders – Harry, his girlfriend Marion, best friend Tyrone and mother Sara – over three seasons – summer, fall and winter – as they attempt to live with their addictions before finally being overwhelmed by the unforeseen yet inevitable consequences of their decisions. Dealing with themes of desperation, delusion, selfishness and human weakness, Requiem for a Dream is at times unflinchingly bleak - it’s nighmarish depiction of the horrors of drug use will put you on the straight and narrow faster than any afterschool special. In all honesty, it may well be one of the most depressing movies ever made. It is also one of the best.

  • Why Students Should Consider Community College as a Smart Option

Why Students Should Consider Community College as a Smart Option

Though in the past, community colleges have been perceived as “schools for those who can’t hack 4 year colleges,” that is changing. Not only are community colleges much more reasonably priced, but they offer some outstanding benefits that sometimes go unnoticed. As you finalize your decision for where you will attend your freshman year, don’t overlook the positive aspects community colleges offer.

    Small classes
Many students find that the typical class size of community colleges is more student-friendly because of the easy access to one-on-one time with instructors. It’s just easier to build a relationship with an instructor who doesn’t have 200 other students in that same class. If you are concerned about being a number instead of a person at a huge university, a community college might be the answer.

    Lower “overwhelm”
Transitioning into the independent college life can be scary. Large class size, unfamiliar roommates and heavy work load often adds up to stress and anxiety for incoming freshmen. In fact, one of the reasons that college freshmen fail to live up to their potential is that the complete change of lifestyle and requirements of studying overwhelm them. Starting out in a different environment, but one that is closer to home and not as large can aid students in settling into college life more quickly and effortlessly.

    Smart instructors
Of course, 4 year colleges have smart instructors too, but there are some advantages to being taught by un-tenured professors. Many of the instructors in community colleges have actual real world experience in the field they are teaching. Theory is great, but sometimes practical information is more helpful, especially to new college students. In addition, the instructors in community colleges are there because they love to teach, not because academia is the only place where they can get paid to do research and get published. Some professors see the teaching part of their career as something they have to do. Taking a class with an instructor who loves to teach the subject can make a world of difference in how much a student learns.

    Lower fees
With the cost of college skyrocketing, this point will most likely come into the decision of where to attend. Not only is community college tuition much less expensive, but students also have the option of living at home instead of paying large sums every semester for housing and a meal plan. There is also little chance that you will have to pay additional fees, such as for the student recreation center, even if you don’t use the facility. Since community colleges are less concerned about having all of the amenities of a country club, students don’t pay hidden fees.

    Student Life
One misnomer about community colleges is that there is no student life. No sports, no clubs, no interaction. But many community colleges have changed all of that. With the rise in their population, they have seen an increase of interest in student life, so they have branched out to develop more school and community spirit. Many community colleges have sports teams and non-academic clubs; it is no longer true that community colleges are only focused on the classroom aspect of college life. More are offering a well-rounded education for those interested in all they have to offer.

  • London Machine Learning Meetup... and joining a startup.

Three months ago I decided to end my employment at Microsoft. I had a great time, met loads of interesting people and will definitely miss being in the Cambridge research lab (as well as the occasional trip to Seattle).
Next up I am joining a startup company called Rangespan. I met the founders of Rangespan at Silicon Milkroundabout in April this year. When I got talking to them it was immediately obvious there was a hell of a lot of machine learning to be done there.
Rangespan is essentially an e-commerce platform which is organizing a marketplace for suppliers to sell products to big retailers. On one hand Rangespan is trying to build the biggest catalog in the world. We're doing some by fusing many different information sources (supplier feeds, manufacturer feeds, crowdsourced data, crawled data). The three big learning problems in this space are:

    1. Matching: out of millions of product descriptions (semi-structured & textual), how do you recognize which descriptions talk about the same product? Record linkage is the keyword here, but making it work at large scale and under very small precision and recall margins is a challenge.
    2. Reconcilliation: when you have 100 different descriptions of a product, and you want to construct the best possible description of the product, how do you do that? I think the speech recognition and machine translation community has a few neat tricks up their sleeve to be applied here: in the abstract if we think of each of the 100 descriptions as the output of a noisy channel with the unknown ground truth description as the input, the challenge is to invent a prior and model for the noisy channel. Machine learning baby!
    3. Information extraction: the data we are gathering is only semi-structured and most often marketing text. The question now becomes: how do we figure out form a USB stick description that the product has a "4GB" capacity. How do we figure out that "4GB" is the same as "four gigabytes" etc etc. There's loads of great work on information extraction which we can build on; the good news is that our domain is restricted (physical goods) the bad news is that the domain is quite large (1000's of categories, 1000's of attributes).
Besides the catalog, Rangespan is also building an order pipeline component. One crucial component of that pipeline is the system that assigns retailer's orders to suppliers. The idea here is that for each product we have a pretty good view of the supply curve (what suppliers sells how many items at what price). We also have a pretty good view of the demand curve: by aggregating many different retailers we can predict what the demand for a product will be. This allows us to make very quantitative decisions about how to choose the price for that product to optimize metrics like user experience etc. In this area a mix of statistics (time series analysis), decision theory, econometrics and optimization are crucial ingredients... together with a ton of data ofcourse.
If this all sounds like music to your ears, then let us know. We're hiring!
Joining a startup also meant I am now working in London. One of the coolest things I discovered about being in London is the great number of meetups people are organizing. From MongoDB office hours (thank you for all the help 10gen!) to the Hadoop and Big Data meetups. Although big data is crucial at Rangespan, we think clever algorithms (as in machine learning) are as crucial to building successful insights from data. As such we are kicking off the Machine Learning Meetup as of January 2012. We'll put some fun talks together with the London machine learning community and probably do some study groups on the Stanford online learning courses.
If you live closeby and haven't yet signed up, you can find all meetup details here.

  • Five Bad Ways to Choose a College

Five Bad Ways to Choose a College

Honestly, there is no formula to determining which college will be ideal for a student. And, just because you hear that a particular university rocks doesn’t mean it will suite your needs and interests. It’s important for each individual student to decide for themselves where they will be happy, since, after all, it will be their home for 4 years.
    college-scholarships.com

Though there are no set rules for making this important decision, in general it is a bad idea to choose a college based on only one factor. Because humans are multidimensional, you should take into consideration all of the things that are likely to be important to you. This will require some hard work and careful research on your part, but it will be well worth it. Consider making a pro and con list of all of the important aspects you want to consider for each college. To help get you started, make sure you aren’t using these bad ways to choose your college.

    1. The ____ friend
This one may be cliché, but it is so for a reason…because it happens so frequently. But consider that what is a great college for one person isn’t for another. And even if your boyfriend/girlfriend/best friend is attending school there, keep in mind that one of the great things about college is the opportunity to meet new people and experience new things. If you and your ____ friend are truly committed to the relationship, not being on the same campus won’t matter in the long run.

    2. The location
Regardless of whether you can’t wait to get away from home or you want to stay as close to home as possible, choosing a college simply because of its location is a bad idea. If the location is truly important to you, at least do your research into several college options that meet that requirement. Then you can pick the one that is truly best for you while still being in a location that suites you.

    3. The program
If the program you want to go into is stellar, but you don’t like much else about the university, reconsider. There are typically several universities that offer top programs, no matter what degree you are considering. By examining several colleges that have top-rated programs of interest, you can determine which one really fits best with all of your interests. Remember that college is about more than academics. Though you want to choose a quality program that will prepare you for a successful career, you don’t want to be totally miserable for 4 years while you earn your degree.

    4. The sports/dorms/food/parties
No matter who you are, you are not one-dimensional. And while the quality of the college’s sports teams, dorms, food or parties might be important to you, that one thing alone will not make you happy while on your own for the first time. Make sure that the college you choose to attend has multiple pros for you, not just one. Believe it or not, students cannot live by football alone.

    5. The only one
Going to a college just because it is the only one that accepted you means one thing: you didn’t apply to enough. It’s rare that a student only gets one offer. Make sure that you spend the time to investigate lots of different colleges, attend college visits, talk to heads of departments, check out the town atmosphere, learn the important college statistics and then apply to several that have lots to offer you.
